What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. You work in focused 25-minute intervals (called "Pomodoros") separated by short 5-minute breaks. After completing four Pomodoros, you take a longer 15-30 minute break. This rhythm helps maintain high concentration while preventing mental fatigue and burnout. It is one of the most popular productivity techniques worldwide.

Why use a Pomodoro Timer?

The Pomodoro Technique works because it leverages two psychological principles: timeboxing (working within defined time limits creates urgency and focus) and regular breaks (preventing mental fatigue and maintaining performance). Studies show that taking regular breaks improves concentration, reduces stress, and increases overall productivity compared to continuous work without breaks.

How to use the Pomodoro Timer?

Click Start to begin a 25-minute focus session. Work on a single task without interruptions until the timer rings. Take a 5-minute break — stand up, stretch, get water. Start another Pomodoro. After four Pomodoros, take a 15-minute break. Our timer automatically cycles between work sessions, short breaks, and long breaks, tracking your completed Pomodoros throughout the day.

Tips for effective Pomodoro sessions

Before starting, write down the specific task you will work on during the Pomodoro. If a distraction or new idea comes up, note it on a list and return to your task. During breaks, completely step away from your work — do not check email or social media. If a task takes more than 4 Pomodoros (2 hours), break it into smaller sub-tasks. Over time, you will learn how many Pomodoros different types of tasks require.
