What is a BMR Calculator?
A BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) Calculator estimates the number of calories your body burns at complete rest — just to keep vital functions running like breathing, blood circulation, and cell production. This is the minimum energy your body needs to survive. Knowing your BMR is the foundation of any effective diet or fitness plan because it tells you exactly how many calories you need before any physical activity is factored in.
Why should you calculate your BMR?
Understanding your BMR is essential for weight management. If you eat fewer calories than your BMR, your body goes into a caloric deficit, which leads to weight loss. If you eat more, you gain weight. By knowing your BMR, you can create a personalized nutrition plan that aligns with your goals — whether that is losing weight, gaining muscle, or maintaining your current physique. It takes the guesswork out of calorie counting.
How is BMR calculated?
We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered the most accurate formula for estimating BMR. For men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161. For women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5. Simply enter your age, gender, weight, and height to get your estimated daily caloric needs at rest.
BMR vs TDEE: What is the difference?
BMR measures calories burned at rest, while TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) includes all calories burned through daily activities and exercise. Your TDEE is calculated by multiplying your BMR by an activity factor: sedentary (1.2), lightly active (1.375), moderately active (1.55), very active (1.725), or extremely active (1.9). TDEE gives you a more realistic picture of your daily calorie needs.
